Some of these designs were inspired by his father, Thomas Moorcroft’s botanical drawings. One such drawing was a watercolour by Thomas of orchids, probably drawn at Trentham by permission of the Duke of Sutherland. For this, he received a Silver Medal in 1875, from the Department of Art and Science’s national competition.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eIn 1919, Moorcroft’s bottle oven had been added to the 1913 factory, and the pieces to emerge from it included the superb Orchid vase on a dark ground inspired by William’s father’s drawings.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe story of the 100-year-old vase and the early days of the 1919 bottle oven that created it, inspired Nicola to design her own contemporary orchid vase, Arundina. She carefully selected the tropical bamboo orchid, found from India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand to China, to name but a few countries. To recreate the colour palette of 1919, Nicola selected a celadon coloured clay and painted her watercolour in shades of wine, blue and green. The open orchid flowerheads intermingle between the upright bamboo
