It was essentially a misnomer, unlike tin glazed Majolica - the Doulton product was decorated on biscuit (once fired) body, prior to glazing and further firing. It gave artists the opportunity to showcase their artistic skill. Faience, which was introduced in 1873 and remained in production until the outbreak of World War I. Faience uses a much finer body to stoneware and is generally painted with flowers but also figures and landscapes.
