Native to California chaparral and coastal sage scrub, its range extends along western slopes from Monterey County to northern Baja California, Mexico. Both flowers and foliage have a sweet, fresh fragrance that some people describe as a combination of cedar and lavender. Hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies visit the flowers. Nicola chose the California dogface butterfly to include in her design, which has been the state insect of the state of California since 1972. The 'dogface' name comes from a wing pattern resembling a dog's face which is found on the male of the species. Its wings are an iridescent bluish-black, orange and sulphur-yellow. The female has a small black dot on each of its yellow
